Toy-Ventures returns with a tribute to one of my favourite Science Fiction shows of all time, Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s UFO. This cool looking series only ran a single season but there is plenty of awesome merchandise from all over the world.
We look at Eidai Grip, Dinky toys, Custom Mego, 16 mm films, Imai model kits, Collegeville Halloween costumes, Lunchboxes and a lot more.

3年 agoAs everyone probably already knows. The Jerry Anderson YouTube channel is very active with a lot of good recent new episodes. And the new movie is coming out about the life of Jerry Anderson

3年 agoSo sad those Mego figures didn’t technically exist, darn. 😉 That was first time trying that Premier thing, was looking at the time and thinking “Wait, that’s now.”. ^_^

3年 agoI can’t remember a time when I wasn’t obsessed with this show. I’m just old enough to remember the publicity around UFO when it was broadcast on CBS owned-and-operated stations as well as in syndication, but our local stations didn’t play it. I remember being obsessed with the Dinky merchandise, and unlike you, I’m a big fan of the Interceptor, as strange a design as it is. I actually like the bright glistening green paint job on the toy, I think more than I would than if it were screen accurate.

3年 agoNever had a chance to really get into this, but some great looking toys in there. Also, your enthusiasm is making me want to dive into this series again!

3年 agoI remember watching U.F.O. as a little kid and loving it. I recently bought the DVD box set of the series and am currently rewatching it. It hits very different as an adult. I didn’t pick up on how dark some of the storylines are when I was young. I was probably too distracted by the spaceships and, at times, scantily clad people. I also love the “future” they imagined and would happily live there. I would totally rock a Nehru jacket. 😁

3年 agoI have all the episodes, the card set and all the ships. Lieutenant Gay Ellis was my favorite character. I have the books also.

3年 agoYou’ll be pleased to know that Anderson Entertainment have just released the first volume of a collection of UFO comic strip reprints, that appeared in Countdown, an early 70s UK weekly anthology comic-book that featured strips based on popular sci-fi TV shows of the day, such as Doctor Who. The artwork is gorgeous. There’s a 2nd volume coming out later in the year.

3年 agoAlso, the entire series is available in a beautifully restored Blu-Ray boxset by Network, who have also released the movie compilations, as well as Space: 1999 and it’s compilation movies, and various other Gerry Anderson series on Blu-Ray and DVD.

3年 agoGreat collection. I love the look and characters of UFO…. And that groovy main title sequence (I adore that theme!). Rewatched the series not that long ago when they released the restored blu-ray series in the UK and while there’s a few amazing episodes (about 9 or 9) the rest is a collection of weird stories. The series really suffered from bad writing. Love it though!

3年 agoA wonderful collection, that honours an incredible tv show, Brian.
Several episodes of UFO features actress Wanda Ventham as Colonel Virginia Lake and a fun bit of tv / movie trivia, is that Wanda is the mother of actor Benedict Cumberbatch.

3年 agoThanks for showing us your collection some cool stuff I’ve never seen before. I was lucky enough to meet Ed Bishop once he showed me the watch Gerry & Sylvia gave him. Such a nice man one of my favourite Anderson shows. 😁👍

3年 agoI have only recently watched some of UFO and loved what I have seen. I adore Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet, and have started collecting somr Scarlet toys for my own little collection. Love your collection!

3年 agoWonderful post, Brian.
Loved UFO as a kid and couldn’t get the noise the UFO’s made, out of my head.
The sequence in “Sound of Silence,” where SHADO Mobiles depth charge the lake to flush out a UFO, is still one of the best action set pieces in television.

3年 agoI remember having the SHADO Interceptor, but I had no idea what the show was as a kid. Very cool toy, but lost to history (probably a garage sale).

3年 agoThe series was issued years ago on DVD in the U.S. by A&E, but that is now out of print. Fortunately, an excellent Blu-ray set has been issued by the Network U.K. label in the U.K. and has nice extras, but the picture and sound are stunning in high definition and lossless sound. Too bad it is a Region B locked set, but is worth getting a region-free player for. Shout! Factory seems to have the rights in the U.S. to do it, but they are not doing a thing with them, unless those rights expired. It is a must-have set and Network U./K. also has the other Anderson SuperMarionation shows, including and equally amazing CAPTAIN SCARLET Blu-ray set. These shows are LONG overdue for rediscovery ion the U.S.!

3年 agoVery cool. Never knew there was so much UFO merchandise out there.
I remember watching Space:1999 as a kid, but didn’t watch UFO until a couple years ago.
Shout Factory got nearly all the Anderson shows and I finally got around to watching it.
Such an odd show. Great ideas, solid cast and beautiful design, but the writing is all over the place.
Always intrigued by the idea that 1999 was meant to be UFO S2.

3年 agoWonderful to see your collection, and an excellent video again. We’ve recently had UFO back on TV over here in the UK on the Horror Channel / Sci-Fi Zone segment each night, which was great viewing. Funnily enough, I’ve also watched Invasion:UFO as well in the last few weeks, and found it a pretty good film in itself, so nice to hear it get a nod here too!

3年 agoI loved this show as a kid. I had a viewmaster reel of UFO. I remember the pilots sliding into the tube to get to the Interceptor and only having one shot at the UFO. I also liked the voice of S.I.D.

3年 agoNever got to see this show, but it is for free on TUBI so I’ll check it out. Space 1999 is a classic, moody and nuanced where Star Trek was definitely more obvious in its themes.
